New Delhi: Separatist Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani died in Srinagar, yesterday evening. He was suffering from prolonged illness and passed away at the age of 92. He was a dominant face of separatism in Kashmir. His death has come at a time when he, his party, and other separatist forces are on NIA Radar after the abrogation of articles 370 and 35A. The controversial articles were abrogated on 5th august 2019.
With Possibilities over Large Crowd gathering due to his funeral. The police forces have imposed restrictions including Internet suspensions across the valley. Curfew can be imposed if the situation turns fragile. His close aides have already stated that his final rights will be performed in Srinagar. It is possible that government does not allow it.
PDP Chief mehbooba mufti expressed grief over Gilani’s demise. She said, “We may never agree on many issues. But, I respect him”. National Conference leader Sajad lone also condemned his demise. “ he was an esteemed colleague of my late father. may Allah grant him Jannat” Lone said.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has also announced, that Pakistan will observe mourning and their flag will host half high. Earlier, Gilani was awarded the Nishan-E-Pakistan award in 2020. Which is the highest civilian award given to those who render their highest service to Pakistan.
Gilani was under house arrest in august 2019 after NIA started investigations of Hurriyat leaders. Gilani was the first person to raise demand for UN intervention in Kashmir after Burhan Wani killing in 2016.
