New Delhi: Ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal met with the head of the Taliban’s political office, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, on Tuesday. The meeting took place in Doha. An official statement by MEA India confirmed the same. the MEA said the meeting was organized at the request of the Taliban. This is the first time that the central government has publicly acknowledged meeting with the Taliban.
As Taliban has already mentioned Pakistan as its second home. The terrorist group is seeking India for its acceptance. Meanwhile, India is currently focused on bringing back stranded Indians in Afghanistan and our approach remains ‘cautious’ to the developments. The meeting was bilateral and both of the parties discussed their interests.
The Interests that were primarily focused by India were on safety, security, and return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. Without any harm, especially minorities, who wish to return to India. adding to this Mr. Mittal said another major concern was that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Indian activities and terrorism against us in any manner.
India was emotionally supporting the previous Ashraf Ghani Govt. but, the efforts that were raised have gone down in just a couple of weeks. As Taliban has already mentioned Pakistan as their second home. This statement pretty much clears the air about their stance on the Kashmir issue. However, the Taliban has not made any official confirmation on Kashmir yet.
On the other hand, a Taliban spokesperson recently in an interview informed the media that they want to create a friendly environment with India to the point, India is not hindering their political establishment.
India’s Focus is to remain dominant strategist in South Asia and establish peace in their land. Recent development in Afghanistan has created pressure on World leaders, the UN and so for India. What the future holds for India with Afghanistan can only be understood after these bilateral talks continue. We need to strategize our approach with them. otherwise, the Taliban can be another Pakistan for India.
