Bengal Suspense Ends, ECI Declares By-polls In Bhabanipur

New Delhi: On Saturday, Election commission declared by-polls on 4 assembly seats in Bengal including the Bhabanipur seat. Where CM Mamta Banerjee is expected to contest after losing in Nandigram to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

According to the rules of conduct, The CM needs to get elected to the West Bengal Assembly in 6 months i.e. November 5. Earlier, CM urged the Election Commission to announce dates for the pending by-polls immediately as the Pandemic situation is under control and EC should not play with ‘the democratic rights of people should not be diminished’.

Polling for three more seats Jangipur, Shamsherganj in West Bengal and Pipli in Odisha will also be held simultaneously on September 30 and counting will be on 3rd October.

Bhabanipur is Mamta Banerjee’s traditional constituency, she gave up this seat to take on rebel leader Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram. The TMC candidate who had won from Bhabanipur, Shovandev Chattopadhyay, already vacated the seat for Mamta Banerjee, who lost in Nandigram. Hence, the pressure on TMC and CM was immense to continue their tenure for 5 years.

While the TMC welcomes the decision, state BJP leaders have questioned ECI intentions and asked ‘why polls are not being held in all the seven Bengal seats that are vacant’. CPM and Congress have welcomed the EC’s decision. Congress state president Adhir Ranjan Chaudhury said, “It is better to hold elections on time.”
