After formation of govt. in Tamil Nadu. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has fulfilled its election promise as Chief Minister MK Stalin adopted a resolution on Wednesday urging Central Government to repeal the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.

The resolution stated that the CAA is harming and avoiding secular principles prescribed by the Constitution of India. Tamil Nadu has joined other Non-BJP states such as Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal in passing resolutions against CAA. Opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), walked out of the assembly even before the resolution was tabled and The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) walked out in protest against the act of government. Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), who is in alliance with BJP, however has supported resolution.

The resolution also stated that, Country should be concerned about aspirations of the people belonging to all sections of the society. But it is seen that the CAA was passed in such a way that it does accommodate warm support of the refugees. Therefore, to protect and ensure the communal harmony of this Country and to uphold the Unity Constitution of India, this house resolves urging govt. to repeal the CAA Act 2019.

Tamil Nadu BJP’s floor leader Nainar Nagendran in return, has defended the party decision to pass CAA that allows India citizenship for persecuted immigrants except Muslims from three neighbouring countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
