New Delhi: A chain snatcher suspect was shot down and his associate arrested in the suburbs of Chennai on Monday following a vast hunt that included around 300 police personnel and drones. As per police, the suspects resided from Jharkhand and did menial work in the suburbs of the city.

According to the police, the suspects attempted to shoot at the officers, forcing them to shoot back. The officer said the search operation team was allowed to shoot if necessary as they were informed about the targets being armed.

The identity of the deceased was Murthasa, 25, and his arrested accomplice is Akthar, 28. Aside from Sunday’s incident, the police also suspected that the duo have been in relation to a similar incident that happened on October 4 when a liquor store employee sustained bullet injuries after getting attacked by a gang.

“When these two men tried to snatch the gold chain of a 55-year-old woman waiting for a bus at a toll plaza near Sriperumbudur, she held on to the chain and raised an alarm. That is when they fired in the air before escaping with the chain. We had over 300 police personnel searching for the duo in the lake area from Sunday afternoon,” a senior officer involved in the incident stated.
