World Food Day 2021: History, Significance and Theme

This year’s World Food Day theme is “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow,” acknowledging the food heroes and individuals who have their share of contribution to building a sustainable world with no hunger crisis.

New Delhi: World Food Day is marked on October 16 around the world. It is an initiative taken by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. The day is celebrated to mark awareness globally and to take collective action to fight against the issues related to hunger and ensure healthy food/diet for everyone.

On this year’s occasion, the World Food Day will be led jointly by the UN Refugee Agency, FAO, UNHCR and World Food Programme (WFP). According to the UN, these events will be organized in around 150 countries around the world with various partners and governments.

History

World Food Day was established by former Hungarian minister of agriculture and food Dr. Pal Romany in November 1979. Eventually, it became a way to raise awareness about malnutrition, hunger, food production and sustainability.

Significance

The day is observed every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. The main aim of this day is to address global hunger and eradicating hunger all over the world.

Theme

This year’s World Food Day theme is “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow,” acknowledging the food heroes and individuals who have their share of contribution to building a sustainable world with no hunger crisis. The main idea is to build a hunger-free world.
