“Ghar par ladka hai par lad nahi sakta”, Union Minister Smriti Irani’s comment on Thursday in the reply to competing Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s slogan “Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon” for her party.
Ms Irani quipped the nuance, mocking both former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav at the Times Now Summit 2021.
Mentioning to the “Ladki hoon…” slogan, thrown by Priyanka Gandhi during her announcement last month that the Congress will field woman candidates on 40 per cent of the UP assembly seats, Ms Irani said it means “Ghar par ladka hai par lad nahin sakta”.
Priyanka Gandhi then said that “I am not saying in politics and democracy, people should not try. But losing is a part of politics and I also lost in 2014 but the real question is how many people believes in your efforts.”
She said women leaders should be given equal responsibilities as men.
She then added “When we give constitutional responsibility to anyone, a man or a woman, we should give a woman the same duties and responsibility as men.
Akhilesh Yadav then replied on Ms Irani’s comment that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, she also took a mock at the SP chief, saying this comparison again shows that ‘Ladke hain, lad nahin sakte.”
Ms. Irani then replied that Sardar Valabhbhai is incomparable. And how “virat” he was.
On the gender inequality in India, the Union minister said India has the highest number of women in political offices across the world if one looks at their participation in the governance of the country, including the posts of The Panchayat.
