About 26 Naxals were encountered on Saturday by the Maharashtra police in Gadchiroli district, said Dilip Walse-Patil, State’s Home Minister.

Mr Walse-Patel said, “Today’s action is notable not only in the history of the state but also of the country. We are proud of our police”.

The encounter happened in the early morning of Saturday at the Mardintola forest near Korchi in Gadchiroli district. A C-60 police commando team was assigned to do search operation based on data when they encountered the Naxals, said Superintendent of Police Ankil Goyal.

Bodies Found

The team was commanded by Additional SP Somay Munde. There were also three police officials, who got injured during the operation and are admitted in the hospital and stable now.

“We have found 26 bodies so far from the forest,” said Mr Goyal.

A source said, the identities of the Naxals are yet to be discovered. A member of Maoists’ central committee, Milind Teltumbde, was suspected to be dead in the encounter, though police did not confirm yet.

“Police is verifying the bodies if Milind Teltumbde, who is also one of the wanted suspect in the Bhima Koregaon case, was among the slain rebels”, Mr. Walse-Patil said.

Where the ambush took place, the district lies on the border of Chhattisgarh.
