New Delhi: A life-sized statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Saturday was vandalized in Melbourne, Australia which was gifted by the Indian government, resources stated.

Sources said the incident happened just a day after Prime Minister Scott Morrison disclosed the statue at the Australian Indian Community Centre on Friday in Rowville alongside Raj Kumar, the Counsel General of India and other Australias’ leaders.

Underlining the incident, Morrison told that he was devastated by the news about the statue being vandalized, adding that such attacks on cultural monuments won’t be tolerated.

“It is disgraceful and extremely disappointing to see this level of disrespect. Whoever is responsible for this has shown great disrespect to the Australian-Indian community and should be ashamed,” he said.

The Australian Indian Community Centre situated in Rowville is the first of its kind of the Indian community in Victoria and was established after three long decades of efforts and work, President of the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria Surya Prakash Soni said.
