New Delhi: Vice-chairman of real estate group IREO Lalit Goyal has been detained in a case of money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate.

The real estate tycoon was arrested last week at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi when he was about to take a flight to the United States. A lookout circular was put up against Goyal by the Enforcement Directorate, which investigates crimes related to finance.

“Goyal placed under arrest as he was not cooperating with the investigation,” stated a senior official.

On Thursday, the Mogul was stopped at the airport premises and was questioned. Officials also stated that he was “evasive”, so his arrest was required.

Since 2010, IREO has been monitored over a case of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation.

The company has been accused of laundering $77 million in homebuyer’s shareholding, money and investment to an offshore-based trust.

However, Lalit Goyal and his lawyers have denied the accusations and any wrongdoing.
