In New Delhi, the US embassy has asked women not to travel alone. It also referred to J&K as a state instead of a Union Territory.
“Rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India. Crimes as such sexual assault always happened at tourist sites and other locations.” The US embassy said and warned, “Do not travel alone, especially if you are a woman.”
It also asked people to take exercises to defend themselves when crime and terrorism happen.
Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets or shopping malls, and government facilities, it said.
It warned US citizens not to travel to J&K (except Leh and Ladakh).
In 2019, the special status under Act 370 has been revoked and the state was partitioned into Union Territories.
In March 2019, the US embassy said that Indian authorities report rape as one of the fastest-growing crimes in India. The embassy also warned women to stay safe and remain alert of their surroundings even while traveling anywhere in India.
