India’s Wrestling Community went into a shock after the the news of that U-23 women’s world championships bronze medallist (65kg) Wrestler Nisha Dahiya and her brother Suraj have been shot dead at a wrestling academy in Sonepat by the Coach and owner of the academy.

A few hours later, the news of Nisha’s Death, which spread like flames on Social media, turned out to be “FAKE”.

The 3-time National Champion Nisha posted a 9 second video on her instagram handle confirming that she is alive and safe. Nisha also confirmed that she was in UP’s Gonda to represent Railways team at the Senior Nationals in Nandini Nagar, planned from 11th November to 13th.

TOI did some fact-finding and learnt that it was a case of another girl mistaken for Nisha. A girl and her brother were shot dead while their mother was also injured in the constant firing at the Sushil Kumar Academy in Sonepat’s Halalpur.

The deceased girl was a soon to be a wrestler. It was reported that the injured mother was hospitalised in Rohtak’s PGI hospital.

The Sonepat police in their first FIR said that the girl’s name is Nisha, which arose the confusion. Her family contacted her right after they heard the brutal killing of Nisha.

According to the local residents and coaches at wrestling academies nearby, Pawan opened the academy about 5 years ago and was training about 30 trainees.

The academy has been named after two-time Olympics medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar, Kumar’s father-in-law and 1982 Asian Games champion wrestler Satpal Singh.
