A Winston Churchill painting that belonged to a US president; not to mention it was owned by one of the biggest stars in Hollywood; now has been set to put-up to auction in March as part of the “Modern British Art” sale at Christie’s.
“Tower of the Koutobia Mosque” by Winston Churchill showers from the art collection of the American Filmmaker and Actress, Angelina Jolie.
The painting shows Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech, captured at sunset with the Atlas Mountains in the background. Winston Churchill’s paintings mostly showed Moroccan landscapes, this particular work stands out as the painting Churchill created the Second World War.
In January 1943, the former British Prime minister painted it before attending the Casablanca Conference with the President, Franklin D. Roosevelt. These two politicians decided to stay longer in Morocco and visited Marrakech. Winston Churchill named his painting as “Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque” as token of the two politicians’ friendship and in the memories of their trip.
The painting will go to auction on March 1 at Christie’s, where it can be auctioned for about US$2-$3.4 million. It might also set a new auction record of UK’s former Prime Minister’s work.
The painting of Winston Churchill has been in the personal collection of the Jolie’s Family since 2011. She is best known for her work as a filmmaker and actress but she also has an eye for collection of art.
