New Delhi: Three elephants while crossing a railway track were run over by a train near Ettimandai on Friday night, Police officials stated.

Among the three, two calves were killed by the trains boarding from Kerala, the police further added.

The deceased animals’ carcasses were found the next day beside the railway tracks and further inquiry is awaited, according to the police.

As per the safety and security of animals, the authorities should place barriers or fences across the railway tracks in the outskirts of cities to prevent such incident.  

According to 2019 railway data, over 35,000 animals were killed in the previous four years before 2019 in train accidents.
