New Delhi: on 28th November, National People’s Party(NPP) leader Agatha Sangma has demanded the repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) at the alliance meet ahead of the Winter session of Parliament.
While talking to Media, Agatha told, “Since the farm laws have been repealed and this was primarily keeping in mind the interests of the people. Now, I have requested that PM Modi lead the government to repeal the CAA keeping in mind the same sort of sentiments of the people from the northeast. “
She made the demand at the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Piyush Goyal. However, no positive response from the government was given but, the note of the demand has been done.
The CAA was passed by the government in December 2019. After getting passed in Parliament, widespread protests were witnessed in the country. Those opposing the CAA are concerned that it discriminates based on religion and violates the sovereignty of the nation. Whereas, fear of NRC or National Register of Citizens was planted alleging to target the Muslim community in India.
CAA was a major cause of Anti-CAA riots in New Delhi during Trump’s visit.
