Facebook India Called by Parliamentary Panel, to talk Over Protection of Citizen’s Rights, Women’s Safety

Facebook India officials are going to appear before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) on 29th November to discuss the issue of citizen's rights protection.

New Delhi: As the rumors of Data Protection policy by the Indian Government gets strong. News has erupted that Facebook India officials are going to appear before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) on 29th November to discuss the issue of citizen’s rights protection. Primarily on women’s safety in Social media platforms.

As per the statement of the Parliamentary Panel, “To understand and listen to the views of representatives Of Facebook India on the subject safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space. The meeting will take place today.” 

The officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will also represent themselves and talk on the issue. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is the Chairman of the Panel.

Earlier this week, a Joint Committee of Parliament (JCP) adopted the final report on the Data Protection Bill, marking a milestone for India, the largest open internet market in the world that has been trying to frame a privacy Bill for over a decade. Recently, new laws regarding the functioning of Social Media companies were introduced under IT Act 2000. The government is poised to introduce the Data Protection bill in the next few days.
