NEW-DELHI: About two workers died and 14 were injured in a blast inside Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL), the factory is located in Panchmahal district of Gujarat, on Thursday.
The district confirmed an explosion took place at around 10 am inside the MPI-1 unit of the refrigerant manufacturing plant located in Ranjitnagar in Goghamba. The sound of the explosion was heard several kilometres away in the taluka, the police said.
“There have been two deaths in the blast so far. We are yet to confirm the number of injured and those critical. At least 13 or 14 more persons are severely injured. The team of fire officials is ascertaining if there are any persons trapped inside the complex. Details on the nature of the blast have not yet been confirmed,” Superintendent of Police, Panchmahal, Leena Patil said.
Three of the critical injured workers were rushed to the hospital in Halol.
The district police blocked access to an approach road of about five kilometres to the Ranjitnagar complex of GFL, a company owned by INOX. The facility manufactures fluorospecialities and refrigerants, according to the company’s official website.
The plant that witnessed the explosion was GFL’s single largest refrigerant plant in India.
“The site started in 1989 has four multi-purpose plants and is well equipped to handle diverse chemistry for fluorospeciality products in pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry globally. The site is self-sufficient with R & D, process scale-up and technology transfer capabilities,” the website states.
