New Delhi: The Union Cabinet yesterday passed a proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years i.e. the same as men.

This development has come after More than a year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the plan during his Independence Day address of 2020. Now after the cabinet approval, The Government is likely to introduce an amendment to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and consequently bring more amendments to the Special Marriage Act and Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

The steps are reportedly taken to bring down Population Burst and improve equality of gender. The recommendations were given to Niti Aayog in December 2020 by the Centre’s task force.

Earlier, while the task force was getting set up. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in parliament said, “Women’s age of marriage was increased from 15 years to 18 years in 1978, by amending the erstwhile Sharda Act of 1929. As India progresses further, opportunities open up for women to pursue higher education and careers. There are imperatives of lowering MMR as well as improvement of nutrition levels. The entire issue about the age of a girl entering motherhood needs to be seen in this light.”
