New Delhi: The IMCR National Institute of Virology confirmed the very first case of the Omicron variant on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu. The 47-year-old patient reportedly travelled from Nigeria to Chennai via Doha on December 10.

The infected patient was not in isolation as he was not travelling from ‘at-risk’ country. State health authorities have been tracking his contacts.

The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine announced on Tuesday that around six of the patient’s relatives were infected. A co-passenger was also tested positive. The co-passenger was said to be residing from Valasaravakkam in Chennai.

All the individuals who have been infected have double jabbed except one aging 16 years.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian stated, “all of them have mild infection, and their health condition is stable”.
